The Noticer

In the midst of everything going on around us in the world it is often hard to remember the good we have in our lives. One of the first things that pops into my head when I wake up each morning is how bad or busy the day ahead of me is going to be. Doesn't that sound horrible? It does to me... but it's the truth. I dread having to sit through all my classes, I dwell on the fact that I have little or no free time, I think of all the possible ways I could be catching Ebola-- all of these negative thoughts consume me before I can even eat breakfast.

A few years ago my dad gave me a book called The Noticer. It tells the story of several individuals and the trials and struggles they are facing. While the characters seem like they have it together on the outside, that is not the case. They are all facing serious problems-- marriages teetering on the brink of divorce, young adults giving up on life, business people on the verge of bankruptcy. And they all feel hopeless, alone, and ready to give up until Jones comes along. Jones helps them realize that everything is not always as bad as it seems. He helps each individual characters notice the world around them. Instead of focusing on their lives and their problems, he encourages them to focus on others.

"Sometimes all you lack is a little perspective."

I encourage you all to step back and look at your life-- are you focused primarily on yourself and your problems? Is there anything going on around you that you could be a positive influence on? Take the time to slow down and notice life around you. We all have it so much better than we realize. When you feel that negativity building up inside you take control and fight back.

I've made a conscious effort to be a Noticer these past few weeks and it's made all the difference.

When your day sucks and your feeling down-- remember to be a noticer.

Simply,

Kendall Rose

  4. It's so easy to lose perspective and let something little ruin our day. You're so right, the best way to step out of that toxic mindset is to step into someone else's shoes!

  5. Love this message! With two jobs and being in college I always feel upset about having no time to do anything. I had the realization that I needed to notice things more yesterday when I was walking around my complex and could smell delicious fresh apple pie through someone's window. Just that little observation made me realize there is so much good around me. Thank you for this reminder!

    1. I completely understand Stephanie! Some weeks I just feel so busy with school and work that it seems like nothing can bring me happiness. Like you said it's the little observations that help us see the good!

  12. Oh man--those candy pumpkins really caught my eye. But yes, on the more important message in this post, it's good to remember not to be so caught up in your own life that you forget to notice what's going on in others lives!

    1. They are my weakness... so delicious! When we focus on ourselves sometimes all we see is the negative but when we begin to notice others around us it opens up your eyes to other people's struggle and ultimately to our blessings.

    1. I think this is something that we all struggle with, at least I know that I do! I have just found that focusing on there actually helps me more than it helps them!

    1. It is a great book-- definitely worth the read! I think the number one thing I have noticed is just how beautiful everything is. Corny-- I know... but if you just stop and look up at the sky (or whatever) and just notice how immaculate it truly is.
